’24/7′ is a site-specific, multi-channel installation that explores the intersection of human and machine worlds. Combining field recordings from TU Dresden’s server farms with human voices, the work draws inspiration from the growing realm of high-performance computing. The sounds of whirring ventilation systems and the subtle, microtonal vibrations emitted by supercomputer racks are layered to create a resonant soundscape. As these mechanical noises evolve into a human/machine choir, they replicate the visceral intensity of the server farm environment, creating a powerful reflection on technology’s role in modern life.
The work walks us through a sequence of moods through its use of colour and sound, attempting to attune us to a hidden reality beyond our immediate grasp. Emails are recited within the artwork which were sent at exactly the same time as the recording of the server racks in Dresden. It was these specific online activities that caused the noise, the reading of them points to the obscure connection between remote communication and the self-movement of the technological forces that we set in motion by so doing.
