Night Mode
Night Mode is a series of eight abstract digital photographs of urban dusk, transitional light and colour. The photographs were taken during the dim twilight when the daily visual transformation of the everyday environment occurs. The images depict the view through a window in a city which has a colour-filter applied to the glass. The filter is made from a natural bio-plastic material and therefore serves to mask the artificial light which can be seen from neighbouring houses and occasional cars driving by. The window filters create a material glow, distorting and blurring the view.Inviting the viewer into a dreamlike environment, this photographic series draws attention to a different reality - the world's natural transition into a calmer atmosphere. The soft out of focus images create the comforting feeling of serenity.
The title Night Mode loosely references the digital display setting of phones and computers which was created to help users adjust the displays to a warmer, less blue-light-emitting color for better nighttime viewing and reduced eye strain. The work emphasises slowing down and attention, questioning our own daily night rituals, self-reflection and the embracing of the present moment.
